Our Founder: Azusa Matsumoto
25 Years of International Expertise & Cultural Advocacy
Founded in 2026, “Tokyo Manga Workshops & Courses” is the culmination of Azusa Matsumoto’s 25-year career dedicated to global education and exchange.
Having lived in France (5 years), Canada (18 years), and Australia (2 years), Azusa brings a profound, multicultural perspective to every program.
Key Milestones & Professional Impact:
- 2026 – Global Educator in Action: Launched regular manga intensives in Akihabara for American student groups. In the same year, conducted specialized online workshops at the request of the Embassy of Japan in Guinea.
- Patented Innovation: Inventor of the “Teaching and Learning Platform Using Manga” (Patent No. CA2852282), filed with the European Patent Office. This unique methodology revolutionizes language acquisition through visual storytelling.
- 2014 – Cultural Pioneer: Began extensive global promotion of manga and Japanese subculture, bridging the gap between Japan and international audiences.
- 2003–2007 – Strategic Leadership: Served as a Representative for an International Education Enterprise in France, laying the foundation for her global career.
A Legacy of Purpose: Nonprofit Activities
Azusa’s commitment to social change led her to found “Manga Africa” in Canada (2015). She utilizes manga as a transformative tool for education and public health:
- Improving Literacy in Benin: Spearheaded a project sending boxed manga to children in Benin, a mission that gained significant international media coverage for its impact on literacy.
- Public Health Awareness: Discovered and mentored African artists to produce Ebola prevention posters, a creative intervention that garnered attention across the U.S. and Africa.
- Empowering Global Talent: Facilitated the professional debut of African artists, including a collaboration with Kattam Productions (Canada) for the acclaimed "Kattam et ses tam-tam’s" CD cover.
Media & Activities
- Officially invited to a dinner at the Ambassador’s residence by the Embassy of Japan in Canada and Ambassador Kimihiro Ishikane (currently a Justice of the Supreme Court of Japan) for an exchange of views on manga and Japanese culture overseas (2018)
- Served as a Japanese language and manga art instructor at Jean-de-Brébeuf High School in Canada, alma mater of former Prime Minister Justin Trudeau (2014–2022)
- Delivered a special lecture on manga and Japanese culture at Carleton University (2019)
- Conducted manga workshops at the Embassy of Japan in Canada (2019, 2022, 2023)
- Organized manga and subculture workshops in collaboration with the Embassy of Japan in Canada (2020–2021)
- Collaborated with the University of Montreal to plan and deliver the program “Let’s Learn Science through Manga!” at a private elementary school
- Provided classes for children with autism at the University of Montreal (2015–2016)
